2013 EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM AWARDS COMPETITION
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2013

Submissions are invited in the following categories for entry in the Society of the Silurians 2013 Excellence in Journalism Awards Competition.  Presentation to the winners will take place on Wednesday evening, May 22, at the 89th Annual Silurian Awards Dinner to be held at The Players Club, 16 Gramercy Park South, New York City.

The Society of the Silurians is an organization of veteran New York area journalists.  Founded in 1924, its members come from the ranks of newspapers, magazines, radio, television and wire and internet services. Its annual awards honor journalists whose reportage, integrity and dedication maintain the highest standards of their craft.

The subject matter of entries should pertain to New York and the metropolitan region. A series of articles or photos exploring a single subject may be entered as “one” entry. Winners in each category receive the traditional Silurian medallion, and distinguished achievement certificates may also be awarded.

All entries must have been published or broadcast during the 2012 calendar year. No more than three entries in each category may be submitted by an organization. Individuals may submit entries as well.

Each entry must be accompanied by a $75 payment to the Society of the Silurians.

Limited to 5 entries per organization.  A series of photographs exploring a single subject may be entered as “one” entry.

BROADCAST JOURNALISM

DVD for Television submissions, CD or standard audio cassette for Radio submissions.  A concise summary should accompany each entry, with appropriate credits.

ONLINE NEWS EXCELLENCE

In addition to the standard news organizations, web-based, online-only, news sites are eligible.  Entrants must keep their nominated entries intact and accessible until May 22, 2013.  Site URLs should be submitted —  with DVDs of entries, if possible.  Include appropriate background statements and fees.  Entries with a prime URL and related additional URLs may be considered as “one” entry with one entry fee.

21.    Online Breaking News

Online deadline reporting of a single breaking news event of major importance published on the website within 24 hours of the event. Emphasis on original news reporting and depth and range of coverage.

22.    Online Investigative Reporting/Web Exclusive

Original reportage, web-based, of impact and significance.

23.    Online News Commentary

Exclusive online commentary.  Independent and news organization bloggers and columnists who are published on a regular basis are eligible.   Up to 3 columns per blogger may be submitted as “one” entry. 

Each entry should be labeled specifically by category and be accompanied by a brief statement of background or relevant explanation.

(Each entry in Broadcast Journalism should include the names and titles of all individuals directly responsible for the content of the entry—e.g., reporter,  producer, editor, photographer, etc.)

Each entry must be accompanied by a check or money order for $75.00 made payable to The Society of the Silurians, Inc.

DEADLINE:  ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2013 and sent to the Awards Committee in care of:
