Entries Invited for 2020 Silurian Awards

It’s hard to believe that 75 years have gone by since William L. Lawrence was presented with the first Silurian Excellence in Journalism Award, but it was back in 1945, when the New York Times newsman was honored for his eyewitness account of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, an event that led to the end of World War II and at which Laurence was the only reporter present.

The tradition has continued unabated since that time, and now the call is sounding for entries for the 2020 awards, to be presented next spring by the Silurians Press Club at a gala dinner at the National Arts Club in New York. Journalists from print, broadcast and digital media in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area are invited to compete for awards in 15 categories.

Entries will be accepted from Jan. 6, 2020 through March 2, 2020 for work published, posted or aired during calendar year 2019, so now’s the time to look over what you’ve done since the start of this year, pick out those potential prize-winners, and prepare to enter them in the 2020 competition. Further details concerning how to enter and how to pay entry fees will be announced in late December. Until then, inquiries may be made to Awards Chairman Jack Deacy at jackdeacy@gmail.com.

COMPETITION RULES

  • The entry fee for a media organization is $75 per submission, which must be paid at the time of entry.
